The county seat of Baldwin County, Milledgeville, is bordered by the beautiful Oconee River and holds a rich history that is matched by very few cities in the state. From 1804 to 1868, it was the capital of Georgia and home to thriving businesses and industry. During the Civil War, it played a major role in the Confederacy’s attempt to fight off the troops from the north.
While much of the history still remains, eyes are very much on the future of the city. The 2010 census revealed a population of 18,382 (54,776 when combined with the micropolitan area consisting of Baldwin and Hancock counties), and trends show that the number is growing exponentially.
As it grows, the First Lady of Georgia is becoming well known for its hospitality, opportunities for business, and convenient location to the surrounding lakes and accompanying activities. In town you can discover plenty of charming restaurants, historical attractions, good shopping, and friendly faces. Drive a few minutes to the north and you’ll quickly find yourself immersed in the best Georgia has to offer. There are beautiful pine tree laced hiking trails, world-class golf resorts, fishing and boating, and much more.
Locally, Baldwin County is also known for its high quality education system, with four public elementary schools, a public middle school, public high school, three private schools, and three schools of higher education. Most notable are Georgia College & State University and Georgia Military College.
While the various colleges certainly pull a younger generation into Milledgeville, there are plenty of families and singles moving in. As such, a number of new neighborhoods have been developed in the past decade to appeal to individuals and families in need of modern living spaces and amenities.
