A partnership rooted in the Lake Country community.

The Lake Country has changed quite a bit over the past four decades.  A predominately rural landscape and agricultural economy gradually evolved into a resort and retirement haven after the building of Lake Oconee.  Some may be surprised to learn that the first lake-area business in Greene County happened to be a community bank - BankSouth.

Shortly after Lake Oconee was built, BankSouth, owned and operated by the Reynolds family, decided to make a large commitment to the growth of the lake area.  BankSouth, the leading local bank since 1946 and a top performing community bank in the nation, worked to provide many of the loans that covered the initial cost of development, playing a huge role in how it exists today.  This expansion became an opportunity to further serve customers’ needs, and the market began to shift from land purchases to home purchases.  With the anticipation of home buyers migrating to the area, Harold Reynolds, CEO of BankSouth, opened a real estate brokerage in 1992 in partnership with Bob Murray, previously the director of sales at Reynolds Plantation.

The BankSouth enterprise has continued to contribute to the sustainability of the community.  During the course of the recession, Reynolds worked to consolidate the area’s leading real estate brokerages in order to maintain a strong real estate provider for the area.  In 2011, the three companies officially merged to form Coldwell Banker Lake Oconee Realty/Lake Country, a subsidiary of the BankSouth Holding Company, with the leadership of Tom Martin.  BankSouth also purchased an independent mortgage company that is now BankSouth Mortgage and has grown to the #3 purchase mortgage provider in Georgia.  These expansions allowed the enterprise to grow with the direction of the community and to be able to provide a local, comprehensive suite of services to residents and newcomers.

Coldwell Banker Lake Oconee Realty/Lake Country has continued to see amazing growth.  Through investing in people and culture, it has continuously held the spot as the #1 real estate company in the area and has expanded to five offices throughout the region.  The partnership between Coldwell Banker and BankSouth has offered customers an even greater level of service by combining the premier agent talent, a community bank with 70 years of award winning customer service, and a top ranked mortgage provider.  Through this best in class service, relationships are formed and buyers have access to local experts and decision makers.  Coldwell Banker, BankSouth, and BankSouth Mortgage have all been honored to be voted #1 in their categories by the local Reader’s Choice Awards for the past five consecutive years.

The priority of the BankSouth Enterprise is always relationships. Success is measured in generations, and we consistently seek to make and enrich personal connections with customers, employees, and within our community.   Most recently, BankSouth, in partnership with Coldwell Banker Lake Oconee Realty/Lake Country, founded the Lake Country Discovery Museum – a comprehensive resource allowing visitors to be able to experience all that makes Lake Country special.  You are invited to learn more about BankSouth’s role in the community here.  To find out more about what the Lake Country Discovery Museum offers click here.
